In April 1942 Sultan was appointed Deputy Commander in Chief of US troops in the China—Burma-India Theater. After General STILWELL’s recall in November 1944 Sultan succeeded him as Commander in Chief of that Theater. He led the advance from Myitkyina in February 1945 and re-opened the Burma—Ledo Road. He reached Lashio in March 1945 and took part in planning the reconquest of Malaya, an operation which never took place because of the Japanese surrender in August 1945.
