Leese, General Sir Oliver, 1894-1978

In 1942 MONTGOMERY brought in Leese to command XXX Corps of the British 8th Army in North Africa. Leese was an exceptionally competent leader distinguishing himself at El Alamein and leading the Allied invasion of Sicily. As Commander in Chief of the 8th Army having succeeded Montgomery in January 1944, Leese went to Italy where he succeeded in pushing KESSELRING into retreat. In November 1944 he gave command of the 8th to MCCREERY and became Commander in Chief of the Allied Land Forces in Southeast Asia.
