Balbo, Italo, 1896-1940

An Italian politician, Balbo was one of the most flamboyant figures of the Fascist movement. He was a distinguished pioneer aviator, had been Minister of Aviation and in 1936 was appointed Governor of Libya. He opposed Italy’s alliance with HITLER and urged MUSSOLINI not to enter the war on Hitler’s side. Ironically he was killed shortly after Mussolini nevertheless did so he was accidentally shot down over Libya by his own side.
