Gott, Lieutenant General William ‘Strafer,’ 1897-1942

Gott was a Corps Commander of the British 8th Army in the Desert War. He was a highly competent commander whom CHURCHILL chose to replace AUCHINLECK as Commander of the Army in August 1942. Days after his appointment Gott was killed while flying back from Cairo and MONTGOMERY was appointed in his place.
