Giap, General Vo Nguyen, 1910-1975

Giap was HO Chi Minh’s Deputy, who fought French rule in Vietnam throughout the war. Giap was bitterly anti-French, especially after the death of his wife in a French prison and in 1941 he returned from China to organize a clandestine army of guerrilla fighters. By 1945 his army was 10,000 strong and in August it marched into Hanoi to seize power and declare a Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
