Friedeburg, Admiral Hans von, 1895-1945

Friedeburg succeeded Admiral DOENITZ as Commander in Chief of the Navy in April 1945. Doenitz became Chancellor of the Reich in HITLER’s political testament and sent Friedeburg to negotiate surrender with the Allies. Friedeburg went to MONTGOMERY’s Headquarters at Luneburg on 3 May and after some negotiation signed a surrender document covering German Armed Forces in northern Europe and Germany effective on 7 May.
