Frank, Karl Hermann, 1898-1946

Karl Hermann Frank was the former Deputy Leader of the Sudeten German Party who was appointed von NEURATH’s Deputy and in fact ruled Bohemia and Moravia. In November 1939 he suppressed the students and put restrictions on academic freedom. When HEYDRICH became Protector of Bohemia and Moravia Frank lost some influence but as soon as news of Heydrich’s assassination came through, Frank assumed power and proclaimed martial law. He arrested 3188 people and executed 1357, and a further 657 died under police investigation. He also ordered the destruction of the villages of Lidice and Lezaky. Frank effectively continued to rule Bohemia and Moravia for the rest of the war although FRICK was nominally the Protector. After the war he was sentenced to death by a Czech court.
