Eichelberger, Lieutenant General Robert Lawrence, 1886-1961

Given command of the US I Corps in 1942, Eichelberger directed its operations during one of the most crucial periods of the Pacific war when he helped to stem the tide of the Japanese advance on Australia through New Guinea and won the small but significant victory of Buna in January 1943. In September 1944 he was appointed to command the 8th Army and directed it in the successful invasion of the Philippines and in other operations until the end of the war.
