Douglas, Air Marshal Sir William Sholto, 1893-1969

Douglas was Assistant Chief of Air Staff at the outbreak of the war but succeeded Dowding as Commander of RAF Fighter Command when it shifted to the offensive. His aircraft were involved in fighter battles over the Channel and northern France. In January 1943 Douglas was transferred to RAF Middle East Command and a year later became Head of Coastal Command when he planned the strategies for D-Day and also anti-submarine operations.
