Clark, Admiral Joseph, 1893-1971

Clark rose through the ranks to become one of the Navy Commanders of the US 7th Fleet. At the Battle of the Philippine Sea he was in command of the Task Group containing the new carriers Hornet and Yorktown. The Group was sent to Iwo Jima and Chichi Jima to shell the islands and neutralize them. After the battle Clark was critical of SPRUANCE’S policy of holding back the air arm and of his failure to attack OZAWA’s carriers earlier.
