Appendix 1

Margary’s road numbers

Despite appearances, Margary’s numbering system is not strictly numerical. Instead, his Main Routes have single digits (e.g. 1), Principal Branches double digits (e.g. 10), and then Minor Branches triple digits (e.g. 100). For the sake of simplicity, however, his routes (together with those of the Viatores, who adopted his system) are listed here in strict numerical order. The roads listed by the Viatores and included by Margary are enclosed in square brackets, e.g. [167 St Albans/Mill Hill].1
